Every day, I do my best to be as productive as possible. I don't mind being busy. The end results are usually proof that my efforts matter. However, there are days like today that turn out to be quite nonproductive, even with the best intentions and actions on my part... The winds were really bad today and it felt much colder than it actually was. I wanted to stay home but made a commitment to meet someone and I try my best to never go back on a commitment. This gentleman has two dogs and said he was out of food so I wanted to be sure I was able to help them, regardless of how the rest of the morning went. I arrive a few minutes early so I texted to let him know where I parked. I did not receive a response so I tried calling. After about ten minutes I decided to check out a few other locations, thinking he would call me when he got to our meeting place and I would go back. I drove downtown to the Salvation Army, Fairmount Park, a river bottom outlet in an industrial area of Jurupa Valley and tried a few places in Rubidoux with no luck. I went back to where I was originally supposed to meet the two dogs and their companion but they still were not there. I called and texted again with no response. I was not going to sit and wait any longer nor was I going to go back a third time. I continued driving through Rubidoux and went to the Motel6 in Jurupa Valley. What I basically did was spend 90 minutes driving around and wasted more fuel than I cared to. At this point, I decided to go to our PO Box and then call it a day. When I was leaving the Post Office, I received a text from the gentleman who did not show up this morning. He said his alarm did not go off and I guess he did not hear the phone ringing for any of my four or five calls either. I explained that I was not going back to meet him and I wasn't sure when I would be able to now. Once someone is a 'no-show', I don't feel I need to go our of my way to offer assistance. If it is for spaying and neutering, I will usually give someone a second chance but this was different, because the gentleman contacted me and asked if we could meet and then did not make sure to do his part. I like his dogs and feel bad if they are out of food, but I did more than my part to remedy that so I am not going to beat myself up... If all goes as planned, I have a busy spay/neuter day tomorrow and I will remain hopeful that everyone will show up and on time.
Although I drove to Massachusetts Avenue on the Eastside, Franklin Avenue, Hunter Park, Fairmount Park and a few locations in Rubidoux, the only place I was able to spend time with pets was Massachusetts Avenue. I visited three staying in the kennels outside the shelters as well as two staying in tents on the street. Each received treats and needed supplies. I had an 11am zoom meeting so I went home after having no results with driving around. I took my dog on his walk and made it back inside just in time to get on my computer for the meeting... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, hand warmers, fleece blanket, pet jacket, small bags of dog food, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, stainless steel pet dish, Inaba tuna fillets, simply cesars chicken, chicken jerky treats, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
I had planned on going to storage this morning and then hitting the streets but I wound up doing it in reverse. My first stop was at Ryan Bonominio Park. One of the homeless living in her vehicle had a dead battery so she was not where I thought we would meet. I did drive to the park to give her supplies and I was able to get her some help with the battery from another homeless person living in his vehicle. She has one dog and the gentleman helping her has three. They all received needed supplies. While I was with the gentleman with the three dogs, a woman who was walking asked me if I was 'Taking It To The Streets'. I told her yes and she said she donates to us. I rarely run into donors like that but it is always nice for them to see that I really am out there doing my best to offer assistance. When I left the park, I drove over to the Eastside so I could visit a couple of dogs that I am only able to see on a week end. I would like to visit them on Mondays or Fridays when I am already in that part of the city but it is not possible so I do my best to get over to them once or twice a month. My final stop was at our storage units. I tried to get done there as quickly as possible so I could get home and walk my dog. It was cloudy and the forecast said rain. Thankfully, we had a nice thirty-minute walk with no precipitation. I know people walk their dogs in the rain and I do visit the homeless in the rain but I am not up for a thirty-minute walk in it... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, hand warmers, gloves, beanie, ARCO fuel card, Subway gift card, small bags of dog food, 20-pound bag of dog food from the Star Milling Company, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, chicken jerky treats, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
I was asked to bring dog food to someone staying near the river bottom off of Mission Avenue. I wasn't exactly sure who else I was going to visit but I knew I needed to stop there. On my way, I noticed the disappearance of tents on another area of Mission Avenue. I pulled in to ask the security guard if he knew where people went and found someone who had been in a tent there with his dog. He had carts full of 'stuff' and was not totally sure where they were going so I only left essential supplies there. My next stop was for the person who had left me a voicemail about running out of dog food. That is where I was originally headed and it wasn't far from where I was. I found a small area to safely park my vehicle and got out to let her know I was there. I don't walk down to where she and others stay but they come up to where I park. There was another dog at that location too. His owner had been incarcerated but was out now. The dog is not neutered but because someone else is caring for him and her own dog, I gave them a bag of food large enough for the two of them. One of the women said she was going to ask to keep the dog. If that happens, he will need to be neutered. From there, I drove around Fairmount Park. I spotted someone on her bike and her dog was running alongside of her. I pulled into the nearest parking lot, visited with them for a few minutes and distributed a few supplies. I drove to a few other location but had no luck finding anyone with pets so I went to get fuel, pick up packages at the PO Box and then home to take my dog on walk. I never had time yesterday but he was so happy with my daughter here that he did not seem to care. I made sure he got a full thirty minutes today. He has short little legs but keeps a good pace. Although I feel like his favorite part is the treat he gets when we go back home. LOL... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, toilet tissue, stainless steel pet dish, pet sweater, small bag of dog food, 20-pound bag of dog food from the Star Milling Company, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, chicken jerky treats, squeaky tennis ball, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
I spent the first part of my morning on the Eastside, I parked on Massachusetts and visited pets staying in the kennels as well as those staying in tents on the street, When I left that location, I drove across town to the Mary S. Robert's Pet Adoption Center clinic so I could meet a group of people with dogs needing their vaccinations updated and flea/tick treated. Before returning home, I stopped at our PO Box. I was hoping to find an overdue grant check but it still hadn't arrived... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company,20-pound bag of dog food from the Star Milling Company, small bags of dog food, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, chicken jerky treats, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
I spent my morning at the Motel6 checking on the two of the dogs that received 'the works' yesterday, three dogs that stayed in a room thanks to our recent online fundraiser and another dog that we put in a room the night before. I gave treats to all of the pets and the companions received supplies for themselves and their pets. When I left the motel, I went by our PO Box and stopped at a couple of stores to pick up produce and other groceries. I had to be back home by 11am so I could let my dog out and pay someone who was doing work at the house. The rest of my day was spent like it usually is by updating social media, answering calls, texts, emails, Facebook messages and scheduling more spay/neuter appointments for next Wednesday... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, rain ponchos, 2 can tunnels, 2 dog beds, leash, medium collar and leash set, large trash bags, dog toy, 20-pound bag of dog food from the Star Milling Company, 17-pound bag of cat food from the Star Milling Company, wet cat food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, Inaba Churu Pops for cats, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
Today we had two dogs scheduled for 'the works' at the Riverside County Department of Animal Services spay/neuter clinic, two dogs scheduled at the Mary S Roberts Pet Adoption Center spay/neuter clinic and 2 cats scheduled at the Mary S Roberts Pet Adoption Center spay/neuter clinic. Our appointments were so limited at the beginning of the month so I was hoping for everyone to make it this morning but that was not the case. The companion of one of the dogs that was supposed to meet at 7:45am texted that his car would not start and that he was actually concerned about health issues at the shelter. While I was getting the one dog checked in that did show up, I got a text that the woman bringing two cats was unable to catch them. Then I received another text that she caught a different male cat that has a bad case of ear mites but the carrier she borrowed opened and he got out. Right after that she said she was actually able to get the female cat we were scheduled to spay and would just bring her. All of this before 8am. I had no idea what pets would actually be making their appointments at the other clinic but after a brief stop at home I headed over there. When all was said and done, at our second location we had 2 male dogs and one female cat getting 'the works'. We also had three dogs getting their final DA2PPV vaccinations as well as flea/tick treated. "One by one we get them done, because the only way to combat pet overpopulation and euthanasia in our shelters is to spay and neuter"... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, ARCO fuel cards, 30-pound bag of puppy food, wet puppy food, chicken jerky treats, small bag of dog food, a collar and a small leash.
'Shelter From The Rain 2023' just paid for four rooms housing a total of 8 pets. Whether it is raining and/or just cold, we will be doing this throughout the rest of the Winter and into early Spring, until the funds run out. This morning, I went to the motel. I stopped in the office, to bring homemade cookies to one of the staff who always goes out of her way to assist me. Next, I went to visit each of the pets so I could give them treats and distribute needed supplies. While I was in the process of going room to room, I stepped in a mess left on a door mat by a dog with an owner that didn't bother to pick it up. I cleaned my shoe as best as I could with the supplies that I had but not enough to walk into every room. I made it into most and visited all of the pets so my work was still done. When I left the motel, I checked our PO Box, got fuel and headed home. All six of our spay/neuter appointments for tomorrow are full so I began scheduling next week's appointments. Starting in February we are supposed to have six appointments at Mary S. Roberts each week as well as two as the Riverside County Department of Animal Services. I am not sure if we will have the funds to fill all of those but I will do my best to make it happen... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, fleece blankets, hand and toe warmers, pet jackets, small pet leash, medium pet collar and leash set, Inaba Churus for dogs, small bags of dog food, 20 pound bag of dog food from the Star Milling Company, doggie waste bags, chicken jerky treats, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
Before going to the Eastside this morning, I had to go to our storage units to drop off a couple of things and to load pet food. Temperatures were in the high 40's but the wind made it feel so much colder. I was grateful, each time I got back in my vehicle and could warm up a little. I started my visits on the Eastside. I drove up Franklin Street first but did not see the people or the pets that stay in 'Illuminations'. I kept driving and then parked in the Path of Life Community Shelter parking lot so I could visit with a couple of dogs that stay in the kennels and one that stays in a tent on Massachusetts Avenue. A fire truck and ambulance arrived the same time I did. One of the older gentleman who stays in a tent on the street was in need of medical attention and left in the ambulance. I always feel worse for any ill senior on the streets. I hope this gentleman received whatever help was necessary. When I left that location, I drove to Hunter Park where I saw a familiar RV. Their companion was outside and I knew there were a couple of dogs inside so I asked him to bring them out. He did. I had not seen them in a couple of months so I was happy to find them today. After that stop, I drove back over to Franklin Street to see if 'Midnight' or 'Suzy' were out with their companions but I did not see either one so I contacted the companion of 'Solo' and went there. My allergies can only handle so much wind so I decided to call it a day after that. I went home briefly and then met a friend for lunch, before sitting at my desk to work on social media, emails, text messages, direct messages and phone calls... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, hand warmers, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, chicken jerky treats, squeaky tennis ball, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
I made arrangements to meet someone at Fairmount Park, this morning. I arrived a little early so I drove around to look for other homeless people with pets. I saw 'Ruckus' and his companion as soon as I pulled in so I stopped there first. I wanted to offer them a motel room for tomorrow night and asked that the message get to others who would like a night out of the cold. When it was time to meet the couple and dog I was there for, I drove to another area of the park. We visited and I distributed needed supplies. I also offered them a room for tomorrow night. While I was with them, I made that offer over the phone to another family too. My next stop was my last one. I drove out to a field where there is a homeless encampment. I was able to visit with and distribute supplies for five of the seven pets that stay there. I also made the motel offer and spoke to a woman about neutering her puppy, before I left to go back home. I had to pick up a package that needed to go to the Amazon locker hub and get changed to meet a friend for lunch. It felt good to put on something other than my 'Taking It To The Streets' attire and enjoy a meal with a friend I don't see often enough. The rest of the day was spent doing the usual: social media, emails, phone calls, text messages and dm's. Looking forward to another sunny and productive day tomorrow... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, hand and toe warmers, socks, body wipes, fleece blankets, pet jackets, small bags of dog food, 20-pound bag of dog food from the Star Milling Company, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, squeaky tennis ball, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
I thought I would be seeing a large number of pets today, now that the rain stopped and the sun was out but that was not the case. I was unable to reach a few of the people I knew would be in need of supplies but I left voicemails for each of them and text messages too. My first stop was off of Mission Avenue for 'Honey Girl'. We had a visit and I distributed needed supplies. I proceeded to Fairmount Park from there. I was asked to meet someone at 9:30 and I arrived a few minutes prior to that. When I pulled in to one of the parking lots, I saw 'Ruckus' and his companion so I distributed supplies and spent some time with them first. The companion of the other two dogs arrived soon after. We visited and they received needed supplies. When I left the park, I drove over to Pine Center and Ryan Bonominio Park but nobody was there. I thought about looking at one more location but wasn't sure if I would have time to go to Van Buren Animal Hospital and pick up the prescription for the food 'Sammy' needs. I decided to go get the prescription and check that other location tomorrow... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, beanie, hand and toe warmers, socks, body wipes, small bags of dog food, 20 pound bag of dog food from the Star Milling Company, pet jackets, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
The sun was shining this morning but the wind made the 50-degree temperature feel much cooler. My first stop was on the Eastside on Massachusetts Avenue. I parked in the lot at the Path of Life Community Shelter and visited with four pets there. Three of them stay in the kennels at night, while their companions have a bed in one of the three shelters there and a fourth was just visiting. As I was leaving that location, I spotted another dog being walked on Kansas Avenue so I pulled over and stopped for them. From there I drove through Hunter Park but did not find anyone with pets. I was on Iowa Avenue and turned into the Staters Brothers parking lot so I could see if anyone was in that area. As I was pulling in, I spotted a familiar vehicle pulling out. She put her window down and we agreed to meet in that lot. I thought about going somewhere else when we were done, but I wanted to check the PO Box as well as run a couple of errands for myself so I decided not to. The place(s) I missed today are first on my list for tomorrow... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, hand and toe warmers, socks, body wipes, 2 large bags of recyclables, stainless steel pet dish, pet jackets, doggie waste bags, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, small bags of dog food, Inaba Churus for dogs, small squeaky Kong ball, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
At 7am I arrive at Sprouts in Eastvale and then made another stop at Stater Brothers. When I went back out, I spent the next part of my morning at the Jurupa Valley Motel6. I visited all five pets that received 'the works' yesterday as well as the two that had vaccinations updated, nail trims and flea/tick treatments. When I left the motel, I headed home to take my dog for a walk that he did not get earlier, due to my not wanting to walk until it hit 50 degrees. After his walk, I went to have my nails done and then to our PO Box, before going home for the day... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, Burger King gift card, pet bed, cat tunnel, kitty litter, fleece blankets, chicken jerky treats, small bags of dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba tuna fillets, Inaba Chur Pops, Inaba Churus for dogs, stainless steel pet dish, plush squeaky pet toys, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
It was only 36 degrees this morning. I don't know how the homeless handle this. I am fine when my time in it is limited but I could not imagine being outside 24/7. I was grateful I was just going to meet people for spay/neuter appointments which automatically limits my time in the cold. However, I was very disappointed when I waited outside the Riverside County Animal Services spay/neuter clinic. I confirmed both appointments for there and nobody bothered to show up or answer any of my calls and texts. At that point I just left. I went home for about forty-five minutes, until it was time to go to the Mary S. Robert's spay/neuter clinic where I had other pets scheduled for spaying, neutering and vaccination updates. I am happy to report that all five pets arrived on time for their spay/neuter surgeries as did the pets receiving updated vaccinations, nail trims and flea/tick treatments. When I left the clinic I got fuel, picked up packages at our PO Box and had time to take my dog for a walk. The morning got off to a rocky start but it ended well. "One by one we get them done, because the only way to combat pet overpopulation and euthanasia in our shelters is to spay and neuter"... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, ARCO fuel cards, wet kitten food, wet cat food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, Inaba Chur Rolls, Inaba Churu Pops, Inaba tuna fillets, small bags of dog food, 17 pound bag of cat food from the Star Milling Company, chicken jerky treats, collapsible pet dish, squeaky pet toy, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks.
It wasn't raining but it was 41 degrees when I left the house this morning. That may not seem cold to people on other coasts but it sure felt cold to me. I put on gloves, the seat heater and headed to my first stop. A gentleman who contacted me asked if we could meet at the dog park on Mission Avenue so that is where I went. He is lucky enough to have a van so he and his two dogs and a dog he is caring for were able to stay relatively dry but he was in need of dog food. I gave him that as well as a few other supplies and then headed to the Eastside. I normally go by the Path of Life Community Shelter on Mondays and Fridays but the rain kept everyone out of sight yesterday so I thought I would try today. On my way, I made a stop on Franklin Street near Illuminations where I met with a dog and her companion. I thought they would be in their new apartment by now but not all the paperwork was complete so it won't happen until then. From there, I drove to the shelter parking lot and visited with three more dogs and distributed needed supplies. I also found out that the companion of a dog I am supposed to provide 'the works' for tomorrow has been in the hospital. Not sure what will happen with tomorrow's appointment but this is the type of thing we make exceptions for when someone can't show up. As I was driving away, I was flagged down by a couple on Massachusetts Avenue that said they needed their dog neutered. I still had one open appointment for tomorrow so I put the dog on the schedule. I made one last stop at our PO Box and then headed home to take my dog for an overdue walk, before I started working on our social media, answering emails, texts, direct messages and phone calls. The work is only partially over, when I go home, There is always more to do... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, gloves, beanies, socks, rain ponchos, fleece blanket, pet jacket, 2-20 pound bags of dog food from the Star Milling Company, small bags of dog food, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, simply cesar chicken for dogs, individual bags of dog treats, chicken jerky treats, small stainless steel pet dish, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks.
I can't recall the last time the weather kept me from visiting pets and definitely not two days in a row. There have been times I have only stopped for one or two but these past couple of days have made it impossible to even do that. I drove around for over an hour this morning but the rain never let up until after I got back home and it still drizzled for a bit after that too. When I left the house, I drove straight to the Eastside. I checked a couple of areas in Iowa Avenue, Hunter Park, Franklin Street, Massachusetts Avenue, Fairmount Park and Rubidoux. All I accomplished was wasting time and fuel. There was flooding in some areas, too much mud to travel in others and tents at a number of locations with people staying inside trying to keep dry. I did spot one gentleman with a dog near Kansas but I had never met him or the dog and wasn't sure about stopping for them. If I see them on Friday, I will do it then. My days always revolve around what I do in the mornings so this is the second day I have altered my routine. The rain is supposed to be gone tonight and then back Thursday morning so I am hoping for Tuesday and Wednesday to be more productive. Not sure about Tuesday at the moment but Wednesday's spay/neuter appointments are already full. I am also hoping everyone shows up this week!
At 7:30 this morning, I headed out to bring a television I am no longer using to a woman who recently got housing. After many years in the river bottom, she and the dogs are now indoors. Even though the tv is used, it still has a decent picture and I thought she might like it. I had to go to pick up a few things at my storage units so I did not have time to visit the dogs but I plan to in the near future. After I loaded my vehicle, I went back home to unload most of it and re-load with what I might need for today's travels. Unfortunately, it was pouring rain all morning so when I went driving around, I could not find anyone with pets. I saw a lot of flooding and did not try to go to any of the locations where I felt I might get stuck in the mud. I spent a good hour looking but finally decided it just wasn't happening today. My goal was to find people and pets to put in rooms tomorrow night so they can spend a warm dry night out of the elements. The rain is supposed to end sometime Monday so we will just be left with cooler temperatures at that point. I felt bad that I was not able to offer assistance to anyone today but I will try again tomorrow and hopefully the rain will not be coming down as strong as it was this morning.
I managed to take my dog for a walk, before the rain start but it began drizzling as soon as I left to go to my first stop at a river bottom outlet in an industrial area of Jurupa Valley. Thankfully, it was wet but bearable so I was able to visit with a couple of pets and distribute needed supplies. When I left that location, I drove through Fairmount Park but could not find any of the people and pets I was looking for. I continued driving to Ryan Bonominio Park where I was still unable to find anyone homeless with pets. I did reach one pet companion by phone. He was actually nearby and going to recycle at Pine Center so I told him we could meet there. Before I found him, I saw a woman I know sitting by the church with her dog so I pulled in to visit with them. When I was done, I drove around back to the recycling area and visited with the dog I initially went there to meet. While I was there, a call came in from the Department of Animal Services. A dog I neutered years ago has my number as a backup on his microchip. His companion had a stroke and her daughter has been caring for him. He got loose last week but was found and then he got out again. This time the finder brought him to the shelter to have him checked for a chip. Unfortunately, I could not reach his companion while on the phone with animal services. He was found in San Bernardino and was being turned in to Devore. I was able to reach his companion a short time later and let her know what was going on. I hope her family member is more responsible now. He has been lucky the last two times but who knows what could happen in the future. After that last stop, I drove across town to pick up an item I ordered online, stopped at our PO Box, the grocery store and then headed home... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, gloves, beanies, socks, rain ponchos, fleece blankets, pet jackets, hygiene and snack bags, large trash bags, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, Inaba Churu Rolls, Inaba tuna fillets, chicken jerky treats, Max and Neo dog leash, 2-20 pound bags of dog food from the Star Milling Company and bully sticks were shared.
I spent my morning on the Eastside. I parked in the lot outside the Path of Life community Shelter where I visited with pets staying in the kennels and one that stays in a tent on the street. I was unable to visit with a few of the dog sin the kennel, because nobody had come to take them out while I was there. When I left that location, I made a stop on Kansas Avenue where I saw someone walking a dog I know. We discussed getting her vaccinations updated and I gave her companion a few supplies. As I was leaving them, I drove to University Avenue where I found another dog I was looking for. I pulled in to the nearest place I could park and visited for a bit, distributed needed supplies and then headed to Jurupa Valley to our PO Box. It was empty but I always check it if I have time, because I never know what might be waiting for us. I headed home, after that. I did not have time to stay long, because I was meeting someone for lunch but I was there long enough to give my own dog some love and a potty break. The rest of the afternoon was spent as usual. I answered calls, texts, emails, updated social media and worked on spay/neuter appointments for this coming Wednesday... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, gloves, beanies, socks, fleece blankets, pet jackets, small bags of dog food, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, Inaba tuna fillets, chicken jerky treats, large stainless steel pet dish, small collar and leash set, small Max and Neo dog collar, collapsible pet dish, squeaky tennis balls, bully sticks and kabob chew sticks were shared.
Because we did not have any pets recuperating at the motel from spay/neuter surgery, I did not need to go to the motel today. I was asked to meet the companion of two dogs in a field where I sometimes meet someone with her dog. I arrived a few minutes early and spent time with the dog that was there. I stayed for five or ten minutes after the time we agreed to meet but I had too much to do to stick around so I left. I had to make a detour to find out if a dog that was running loose in Colton, might be a dog that was taken about a month ago. The person who sent the photo couldn't catch the dog but she did send a photo. The person who I thought the dog might belong to does not have a phone so I had to drive to her encampment to show her the photo. Sadly, she said it was not her dog so I headed to my next stop near Riverside Avenue in Colton. I was meeting a gentleman with an 8- or 9-week-old puppy to discuss a cough and future neutering. The puppy never coughed during our visit but I told him to call Feeding Pets of The Homeless if he as concerned. He said a foam cushion got chewed up and he wasn't sure if the puppy might have gotten some of it stuck in his throat or something. I did not see or hear any issues but the companion knows how to get help if needed. When I left that location, I drove over to Redi Park for a visit and then to Fairmount Park. There was one dog at the first park but none at the second. I needed to go to a store in Magnolia Center and it is located fairly close to Shamel Park. There is someone living in her vehicle that spends time at the park and she needed supplies. She texted me yesterday but it was after I left my storage units which happen to be around the corner from Shamel. I don't mind driving out to people but I usually try to meet with two or more pets if I am going to go the extra miles. Thankfully, the companion of this dog was getting ready to take a shower at a nearby church so she met me in the Rite Aid parking lot. When we were done, I made quick run into the grocery store to purchase something my Staters doesn't sell, stopped at our PO Box and got home in time for lunch... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, gloves, beanies, socks, hand and toe warmers, fleece blankets, pet sweater, pet jacket, pet sweater, wet puppy food, small bags of dog food, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, Inaba chicken fillets, Inaba tuna fillets, chicken jerky treats, plush squeaky pet toy, small squeaky Kong ball, bully sticks and kabob chew sticks were shared.
I had appointments for two dogs to get 'the works' this morning. I was unable to reach their companion until late yesterday afternoon. At that time, she informed me that her dogs were still impounded in Corona and that they were not going to make it. It would have been great if she had given me a heads up but she didn't so I started calling people who are scheduled for next week. I was only able to reach one. She had a male kitten so we put him on the appointment list for today. Around dinner time, I received a call from someone needed her cat spayed. I told her to show up this morning and we would work it out. She did not show so I called and she told me she could not find a ride. Appointment wasted but I was still grateful to get one in. I was also supposed to meet someone who had a puppy spayed last week. Someone had stolen the puppy and was trying to sell it. He did not realize she was spayed and microchipped. Even though the puppy was returned, her sutures had opened. They were supposed to meet me this morning too but did not show up. When I left the clinic, I went home for a bit to check on my own dog. He had some teeth pulled yesterday and was struggling some with the anesthesia and pain meds. He was ok so I went back out. I had put a couple of people and their pets in the motel last night and I went to visit them. I visited the room with the five dogs but the other room had already checked out. I was sorry not to see the dogs but the companion left me a nice note in the office. She said she had to check out to take care of some things while there was a break in the rain and thanked me for the room. As I was leaving, I spotted a familiar dog in the parking lot with his companion so I stopped for a visit and to give them a few things. I then went to our PO Box to get a package delivery and then back home to check on my dog again, before heading out to our storage units. Christine Langdon was picking up and delivering our monthly pet food donation from the Star Milling Company and I was also meeting other people there to give them some pet supplies that were given to me to share with rescue friends….There was a break in the rain and we aren't expecting more until Friday so I am enjoying the dryer weather... "One by one we get them done, because the only way to combat pet overpopulation and euthanasia in our shelters is to spay and neuter"... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, Churu Pops for cats, 17 pound bag of cat food from the Star Milling Company, Inaba Churus for dogs, chicken jerky treats, bully sticks and kabob chew sticks were shared.
At 8am, I dropped my dog off at the vet to have his teeth cleaned. It was drizzling but not raining too hard. I was not sure how the rest of the morning was going to go, judging by the weather forecast. It was definitely miserable out there. Everywhere I went was muddy, flooded and the rain was not letting up much. I drove to three locations where I was unable to find anyone with pets so I wound up in a field on the Eastside where there are multiple pets at a homeless encampment. I only visited with four of those that were there but all received needed supplies. My daughter was coming over at 11am so we could go and pick up an order I placed last night. I was on my way home, when I spotted a very wet dog by a shopping cart on Mission Avenue. As I got closer, I could see it was 'Yohan', 'Mazi' and their companion. I had to pull over. They were flooded out of the river bottom and cashing in cans hoping to get enough money for a motel room. I gave them supplies and then made a reservation for tonight. The last time I got them a room, the dog was injured so I looked at this as being the Christmas room they never received. Either way, they needed a warm comfy place to dry put. More rain is coming this week end but I can't worry about that yet. Right now, I am trying to provide help where it is needed. After I check in the spay and neuter appointments tomorrow, I will try to get over to the motel and visit with the pets we put in tonight. Our Star Milling pet food is coming our way tomorrow as well so I hope the weather clears... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, hand and toe warmers, rain ponchos, beanies, gloves, large trash bags, Inaba chicken fillets, Inaba Chicken fillets, Inaba tuna fillets, Inaba Churus for dogs, Inaba Twins for dogs, pet jackets, small bag of dog food, 2-20 pound bags of dog food from the Star Milling Company, chicken jerky treats, bully sticks and kabob chew sticks were shared.
I spent most of my time this morning in front of the Path of Life Community Shelter. I visited with pets staying in the kennels there as well as one that is staying in a tent on the street with her companion. There were seven dogs at that location. When I left, I was driving up Kansas Avenue and I saw a dog I had not seen in a while. She was staying in another city with her companion but they were brought back here temporarily and are staying at Illuminations on Franklin Avenue. The dog's companion told me they will finally be moving to an apartment. It is in Ranch Cucamonga so I won't be seeing them anymore but I am very happy for them. I had enough time to run a couple of errands and check our PO Box, before heading home. When I got home, I was able to beat the rain and take my dog for a walk which was good for both of us... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, fleece blanket, Inaba chicken fillets, Inaba Churu Rolls for cats, Inaba Churus for dogs, Inaba Twins for dogs, pet jackets by Tecla Samtoi, small bag of dog food, chicken jerky treats, bully slices, bully sticks, plush squeaky pet toy, squeaky tennis ball, and kabob chew sticks were shared.
I arrived at our storage units a little before 9am. I was meeting three different people there with donations for us. There was someone from Inaba with dog and cat treats, someone with hand made fleece jackets and someone else with a variety of people & pet supplies. I left there around 9:30 and headed over to Ryan Bonominio Park. I could not find anyone with pets there, at Fairmount Park or on Fleetwood so I drove to an area by the Mission Avenue bridge. I was there last week and everything had been soaked from the rain so I wanted to bring supplies for the weather and the pets. Only one dog was there but I fit her with a jacket and gave her other goodies. From there I went to another Jurupa Valley location near Riverview Drive where I visited with one dog, giving her and her companion needed supplies. My final stop was a third Jurupa Valley location where I visited with two dogs and had a brief visit with one of the cats there. When I was done, I headed home to unload and reload my vehicle, while making sure my own dog got the attention he needed... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, fleece blankets, 2 large tarps, rain ponchos, large trash bags, hand and toe warmers, beanies, gloves, cookie packs, peanut butter cracker packs, beef sticks, cheese and crackers, cheese and pretzel sticks, Inaba tuna fillets, Inaba chicken fillets, Inaba Churu Pops for cats, Inaba Churu Rolls for cats, Inaba Churus for dogs, Inaba Twins for dogs, pet jackets by Tecla Samtoi, small bags of dog food, wet dog food, small bag of cat food, wet cat food, chicken jerky treats, bully slices, bully sticks and kabob chew sticks were shared.
Even though the Eastside is somewhere I normally go on Mondays and Fridays, I will go on other days as long as there are multiple dogs needing assistance. That was the case today. A family with three dogs needed supplies so I agreed to meet them at Bobby Bonds Park. While I was there, another vehicle pulled in. I did not recognize the vehicle but I did recognize the fur babies that were sticking their heads out the windows. I had not seen them in a long time so it was a nice surprise. When I was done with the first three pets, we had a chance to visit. Their companion had been in the hospital. He has a blood clot in his leg and was on medication. He did not feel well at all. I never gave them a room for Christmas and it is supposed to rain again on Tuesday so I made a reservation for Tuesday night. If I have time, I will visit again on Wednesday morning. When I left that location, I headed towards Magnolia Center. There was an item I wanted to purchase from Ralphs. While I was in the store, I received a text from Kimberly at FAAR. She said the sewing club had eleven jackets to donate to us. The only time I am usually in that area is if I go to storage and many times they are not open so this was perfect. I picked up the jackets, stopped at the post office to pay for our PO Box and check on a package, before calling it a day... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, hand and toe warmers, Subway gift card, pet jackets, pet sweaters, 2–20-pound bags of dog food from the Star Milling Company, wet dog food, Inaba Churus for dogs, chicken jerky treats, peanut butter chew sticks, chicken and cheese chew sticks, bully sticks and kabob chew sticks were shared.
I spent the morning on the Eastside. I started on Massachusetts Avenue in front of the Path of Life Shelter, went to Hunter Park and then went back to Massachusetts Avenue. I visited six dogs and two cats and distributed a few needed supplies. When I left that location, I stopped at home to take my dog out for a few minutes, before heading to a personal appointment at 11am. While I was there, I was texted some disturbing news about a dog I have shared about recently. She was impounded December 26th and when her companion found out where she was, he went to identify her. He called me afterwards, asking if I could help. I explained the fees we would and would not pay. He went back yesterday to work on an RTO. Riverside County Animal Services called me for payment that would cover her spay, license, microchip, vaccinations, flea & tick treatment and meds. We had everything set up for Monday, including a two night motel stay. Unfortunately, the news I received today was very sad. The dog was sick this morning and her lungs were filled with fluid. She was euthanized…..I can't do much but will be asking for donations for her cremation. I would like her companion to have her ashes and paw print. He told me he watched her be born and had her since she was a baby. My heart goes out to him. She was just three years old. RIP 'Gorda'... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, fleece blanket, pet jacket, small bag of dog food, wet dog food, Inaba Churus for dogs, chicken jerky treats, bully slices, bully sticks and kabob chew sticks were shared.
It was pouring rain this morning but I managed to stay pretty. I had an appointment at 11am but that gave me plenty of time to stop at the motel to check on yesterday's spay and neuter recipients as well as make a run to our PO Box. While I was at the motel, I visited both pets that had surgery as well as a couple more that were able to keep them company. When I left the motel, I drove over to the Post Office and picked up a few packages that went to our PO Box... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, hand & toe warmers, rain ponchos, socks, cookie packs, peanut butter cracker packs, cracker and cheese packs, pretzel and cheese packs, beef sticks, puppy training pads, wet puppy food, 20-pound bag of dog food from the Star Milling Company, small bag of dog food, wet dog food, Inaba Churus for dogs and bully slices were shared.
I started my day at the Riverside County Department of Animal Services where we had appointments for one female puppy and one male puppy. Each was getting 'the works' and the cost of those services is being paid for by Animal Victory's 'Home Street Home' project. The cost for the motel rooms where they will start recuperating is also being covered by Animal Victory. While I was there, I spoke to a staff member about an impounded dog. I received a call last night from the companion of a female pit bull that was picked up in Rialto on December 26th. He wanted to know if I could help get her out. I explained the fees we pay which include spaying, micro chipping, vaccinating and licensing and those we do not which include impound, boarding, fines and/or late fees. I sent an email to some of the staff as well so he can go there today and work on getting her out. I am hoping one of their programs will help cover the cost of the fees we do not cover. When the dog is released, I am hoping to put her and the companion in a motel room for two nights. Week-end fees are very high but I do not want to send a dog back to the river bottom after surgery, especially in this rainy weather we are having. I will share the progress of this situation as I learn more. After I left the Riverside County Animal Services, I went home for a bit and then went back out so I could visit the dogs we put in motel rooms last night. Those rooms were also paid for by Animal Victory's 'Home Street Home' project. "One by one we get them done, because the only way to combat pet overpopulation and euthanasia in our shelters is to spay and neuter"... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, ARCO fuel cards, McDonald's gift cards, peanut cracker packs, beef sticks, cookie packs, pretzel & cheese packs, pet sweater, small dog collar, dog leash and bully sticks were shared.
It was raining on and off and everywhere I went was wet or flooded. I actually spent more time driving than visiting pets today but I did manage to make three stops. I was hoping to put a few people and their pets in rooms tonight or tomorrow night so they could get a break from the weather. I did not find anyone at the Salvation Army, s river bottom outlet in an industrial area of Jurupa Valley, a field out on the Eastside or Hunter Park. I did meet up with two people and their pets in different areas of Fairmount Park. I met up with another person and his pet off of University Avenue on the Eastside and the fourth dog was at Ryan Bonominio Park with her companion. At one of my stops, there was a guy hanging around that was paranoid about my camera. I explained I was just photographing the dog but he did not trust me and went so far as to say I keep sending people's dogs to the pound. I tried speaking reasonably with him for a bit but he thought he had a nasty picture of me in his head and was not changing his mind. I told him he is talking and listening to the wrong people and he said he has seen it with his own eyes. Not sure what he has seen but I do know it is not what he swearing to. This is how my name get a bad rap in the homeless community. It is by people who don't know me making up things and spreading rumors that others believe. Often times the rumors start with people who are angry because I won't give them supplies if they won't allow me or someone else to spay and neuter their pets. Pure selfishness and ignorance cause the misinformation I wind up having to deal with. Thankfully, I have pretty 'thick skin' when I am out and about. It is still frustrating, regardless... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, hand and toe warmers, rain ponchos, disposable emergency blankets, Max and Neo fleece blanket, small bags of dog food, wet dog food, Simply Cesar chicken for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, Inaba tuna fillets, kabob chew sticks, bully sticks, bully slices and Kong squeaky tennis ball were shared.
Yesterday, I found there was a screw in my rear passenger tire. I am not sure how long it had been there and the leak was slow but I needed to get it repaired before I did today's travels. I was lucky enough to go online and make an appointment for 8am which meant I would still have time to do what I planned. I drove out to Massachusetts on the Eastside and parked by the Path of Life Community Shelter. I visited with six pets that are staying in the kennels or in one of the tents. When I left that location, I made a call to a woman who has been staying at one of the motels with her two dogs. I asked if I could come and visit. She has trouble getting around but a friend was there and he brought them outside for me. As I was getting in my vehicle, I received a notification from Southern California Edison that my power would be off for at least four hours today. I was made aware of this weeks ago but when I called to ask them about something else, they could not find a ticket for my area. They never got back to me so I did not think it was happening. I was wrong. I figured I could just use my power pack to charge my phone and do an 11am zoom meeting on my phone. For some reason, this power pack that I only used once did not work so I had to cancel my appointment. It is a bi-weekly appointment and I hated to miss it but did not want to run my car for an hour and sit in there so the battery would stay charged. I was disappointed to miss the session but it was something I did not have much control over... Waters from Niagara Bottling Company, Simply Cesar chicken for dogs, wet dog food, Inaba Twins for dogs, Inaba Churus for dogs, small bag of dog food, Inaba tuna fillets, chicken jerky treats, kabob chew sticks, bully slices and bully sticks were shared.
Anytime we have the amount of rain that came down last night, there are additional problems for the homeless and their pets. It was still raining lightly this morning, but let up at 9am, right around the time I was supposed to meet a couple and their three dogs. We were scheduled to meet at a river bottom outlet in an industrial area of Jurupa Valley. The people and pets I was going to meet stay closer to the Rialto area but said they could drive to a place that worked for me and for them. They were a few minutes late but that was only because the river bottom had flooded where they were and they had trouble getting out. Two of their dogs are already spayed/neutered but one needs 'the works' and one of the other two needs his vaccinations and license updated. We made arrangements to make all of that happen and I was able to give them needed supplies. When I left that location, I drove over to a homeless encampment near Mission and Crestmore. I was sad to learn that one of the dogs was still missing. I have known her for years and hoped she was back 'home'. Someone who was supposed to be caring for her was irresponsible and the dog disappeared. Nobody has seen her since. I have spoken to the dog's companion on multiple occasions and asked her not to allow this person to care for either of her dogs but she continued to do so and now this happened. I find no pleasure in being 'right'. I just wish the dog was back with her companion. While I was at that location, I met someone with a puppy. Due to the weather conditions and the fact that the companion is related to someone we regularly provide services for, I made an exception to my rule. The companion said she is willing to have the puppy spayed, etc. I will see if she follows through. When I left that location, I drove out to meet a friend who I was exchanging baked goods with. When we were done, I ran into a Wal-Mart Super Store to see if they had any more pet supplies on Christmas Clearance but they were all gone and replaced with Valentine's Day merchandise. When I was done shopping, I got in my vehicle happened to look at the tire pressures. One was lower than the other. I have learned from past experience that means something is causing a slow drain in one of the tires and that was definitely the case. If the tire is still drivable tomorrow morning, I will get it repaired. If not, I will have AAA put on my spare and then get it repaired. I have an 11am appointment tomorrow so whatever happens, my goal is to get the tire ready to go so I can do my daily travels...
