Taking It To The Streets With Lori And Shira

Welcome to Taking it to the Streets with Lori and Shira where our mission and passion is to Spread a Little Kindness each day! Please join us in our efforts in Riverside, California to bring donated food and pet supplies to the dogs and cats living on the streets and snacks, water and toiletries for their homeless companions. Our supporters help us to provide spay & neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchips and county licenses for these street pets.

Taking it to the Streets With Lori and Shira, a nonprofit organization in Riverside that funds veterinary services for pets of the homeless, recently reached another milestone, providing services for Gracie, its 2,000th pet.

The organization funds veterinary services for pets of the homeless to get spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. It also provides licenses for dogs.

The nonprofit began in 2012 as a mother-and-daughter team, Lori and Shira Rich. They began by offering pet food and pet supplies to the dogs and cats living on the streets with the homeless population in Riverside.

They soon realized those animals should have veterinary services so they would be healthier and not contribute to pet overpopulation.

Daughter Shira left after the first year to attend college, but Lori Rich continues as president of the organization, a 501(c)(3) that pays for pets to have surgeries at a low-cost spay/neuter clinic.

'It is hard to express my gratitude for all that has been accomplished since 2012,' Lori Rich said in a news release. 'I am looking forward to doing so much more in the future.'

Our Story

Taking It To The Streets with Lori and Shira was a concept that began by Shira's concerns about stray animals on the streets and grew into a larger concern in March 2012 for the homeless pets we call 'street dogs' and the people who care for them. For many these animals are the only unconditional love and loyalty they receive...read more

Tuesday's Treasures 9-16-2025

My first stop of the day was in Roubidoux where I visited a couple of dogs and provided supplies. From there I drove over to Fairmount Park where I visited with and provided supplies for three dogs. When I left that location, I drove out to our PO Box to pick up a prescription from Kaiser and then I stopped to pick up something to bring to my granddaughter tomorrow. We have six dogs scheduled for 'the works' tomorrow. Five of those are referrals from Feeding Perris Strays. Once I get them checked in and get my dog situated, I plan to spend a couple of hours with my granddaughter. We usually only get to visit once a month so those visits mean everything to me. She is a great stress reliever and being with her brings me so much joy. When the visit is over, I get back to work on making sure everything went well with the spay/neuter surgeries and motel check ins so it is nice to have such a heart filled break in between... Bottled waters, toilet tissue, large dog collar, xl dog collar, three slip leads, large stainless steel pet dish, chicken jerky treats, 20-pound bag of dog food from the Star Milling Company, Dashi meal toppers, Inaba meal toppers, buffalo tendons and bully slices were shared.

Monday On The Move 9-15-2025

My first stop was on the Eastside by the Path of Life Community Shelter kennels. I visited with three dogs that have companions who stay in the shelter. I also gave treats and chew sticks to a stray that has been hanging around there for the past few weeks. She is very friendly but when I try to scan her she bolts. I put in a call to Animal Services, last Friday, but nobody came out so I called again today. She is very thin and she keep darting into the street. I am worried about her getting run over. She is a Malinois so I don't know what her chances will be in the shelter but I do know they are not great where she is now. When I was done with the first four, I drove up the street and visited two more. One of the dog's had injured either his paw or his leg. I shared the number of Feeding Pets Of The Homeless, just incase they needed it. From there, I dropped off some goodies for Ralph Torres and his wife. Ralph is the person who volunteers his time to keep our website going and I am so appreciative of him. My net stop was across town at our storage units to pick up pet food and waters, before making one final stop at our PO Box. I was hoping the donation from Max and Neo Dog Gear would be there but it wasn't yet. I will keep checking... Bottled waters, collapsible pet dish with leash clip, large stainless steel pet dish, chicken jerky treats, wet puppy food, 20-pound bag of dog food from the Star Milling Company, buffalo tendons, kabob chew sticks and bully slices were shared.

Sunday On The Streets 9-14-2025

Before I left the house, this morning, I baked some sugar free banana chocolate chip breads and texted the person who is fostering 'Tink'. I thought I was going to meet some people at a river bottom outlet by the Fed-Ex on Holly Street, in Jurupa Valley, but nobody called/texted to confirm so I asked if I might visit 'Tink' on my way to Kaiser. The answer was yes so I went there first. I brought some of my homemade pumpkin bread with cream cheese flavored chips and white chips as well as a few things for the dog. When we were done, I headed to Kaiser for a flu vaccination. As I was pulling into the parking lot, I received a call asking me if I was still going to meet with people by the Fed-Ex facility. I said I had not planned to, because nobody confirmed but that I would when I was done at Kaiser. They had a table set up by the door so it only took about five minutes for me to get the vaccination and be on my way. I called to tell the group waiting that I was approximately thirty minutes away. They said they would wait so I drove out there. By the time our visit was over, it was time for me to get back home. I needed to give my senior dog a potty break and have lunch before starting the work that had to be done at my desk and ice my arm so it didn't get as sore from the vaccination... Bottled waters, Benadryl caplets, chicken jerky treats, wet dog food, Inaba chicken stew, Inaba meal toppers, 6 pound bag of Bil Jac senior for small dogs, 2-20-pound bags of dog food from the Star Milling Company, large peanut butter dog biscuits, buffalo tendons, kabob chew sticks, bully sticks and plush squeaky were shared.

Saturday's Smiles 9-13-2025

Once a month, a group goes to Fairmount Park with food, clothing and other supplies for those in need. Many of the homeless can be found there and often times they bring their pets so I decided to try and make it down there when that is happening. When I went this morning, I saw a few people I knew that did not have their pets with them but others did. I visited with them, provided treats, chew sticks and a few supplies. There was one other person there with a pet but I had not met them before and did not have time to introduce myself today. When I left the park, I drove out to our (empty) PO Box and then went home. In addition to our social media, emails, texts and phone calls, I needed to finalize the list for pets getting 'the works' this Wednesday. Feeding Perris Strays asked for five of those appointments for some of the homeless with pets that they come across and the other was given to someone who called from Fontana. At this point in time, we have no available appointments, until the first week in October. I don't like scheduling too far ahead, because many people forget so I will most likely wait and have people calling for October starting the 21st of this month. That also gives us more time to get donations to help pay for the spay/neuter services and/or the motel costs. Even when the Healthy Pet Zone Fund is used to cover the fees at the clinic,(which is an enormous help), we still cover the motel fees. What they are doing for us, will just make it possible to keep going and I am so grateful for that! Bottled waters, slip lead, chicken jerky treats, wet dog food, wet puppy food, 20-pound bag of dog food from the Star Milling Company, Inaba meal toppers, bully slices, buffalo tendons, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.

Friday's Furry Friends 9-12-2025

I had a zoom meeting, this morning, but I still had time to go to the Eastside first so I drove to the Path of Life Community Shelter kennels. I visited with six pets and provided a few supplies. When we were done, I ran an errand and then went home to sign in to the meeting. I spent the rest of the day doing work at my desk and hanging out with my dog... Bottled waters, chicken jerky treats, wet dog food, Inaba meal toppers bully slices, buffalo tendons, kabob chew sticks and bully sticks were shared.
